About Us

In addition to a strong background in classical riding, eventing and dressage, owner Jan Roehl, has worked with thoroughbreds in racing and retraining for second careers for over 40 years.

She designed The Horse Lodge from the ground up, to be a place where horses can receive the personal attention they need. If that need is a long term place to call home, a short rest from the track, or an condition needing rest before l resuming their racing, competing or transitioning to a second career.

Some of the unique features of The Horse Lodge include large airy 14X14 stalls (some with 14X16 turn out) small paddocks, and sand round pens conveniently located less than 20 minutes from the Kentucky Horse Park, or downtown Lexington Kentucky.

Jan has also fell in love with carriage driving a pair of our retired thoroughbreds. She has been the first to compete a pair of OTTBs in a Combined Driving Event. To read about Jan and her “boys” click here.

Jan is also highly involved with OTTBs. She is currently a site inspector for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, and the “dressage steward” for the Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover Competition.

On 12 wooded acres with riding trails, we will do our best to make your horse will feel “at home”.

“I cannot speak more highly about Jan and her staff.  They provide individual care to each horse, and always kept me updated on how my boy was doing. I love the friendly, welcoming atmosphere, and the clean well-kept facilities. But most importantly, Jan, and Marielle truly helped me connect with my young OTTB.”
